The True Strength Index is a sophisticated 'low-lag time' momentum indicator. Projected earnings of mining company stocks are provided weekly by Bill Matlack's Metals and Mining Analysts' Ratings and Estimates report published at Kitco and are used to highlight some mining stocks for study. True strength index uses price momentum and double smoothed exponential moving average for its construction. Momentum is the difference in price between the actual price and the price x days ago. It can be a very choppy indicator, so most technical analysts try to smooth the choppiness with moving averages , in this case exponential moving average. True Strength Index formula: TSI = (Double Smoothed Price Change / Double Smoothed Absolute Price Change) x 100. The TSI oscillates between positive and negative territory. If the TSI is positive, this implies bullish momentum. If the TSI is negative, this implies bearish momentum. There are several ways to use the TSI as a signal provider: True Strength Index is a ratio between double smoothed price change to double smoothed absolute price change. The TSI indicator is used to measure a trend's strength and its direction. The True Strength Index (TSI) is a momentum oscillator that ranges between limits of -100 and +100 and has a base value of 0. Momentum is positive when the oscillator is positive (pointing to a bullish market bias) and vice versa. The True Strength Index indicator is generally plotted as a blue line. The signal line is plotted as a red or dark pink line. The figure below shows the TSI indicator.
